Week 3 - Discussion Question 1 - Characters
You should be a little more than half way through the novel now and the characters have been developed. Tell us who your favorite character in the novel is right now and who your least favorite character is right now. Please give an example or reason why you feel this way about the characters. My favorite character in the book so far is Susie, because I can relate to her some by how we both act. My least favorite character is Ben, he just seems like an annoying little boy to me.

My favorite character is Matt. He has patience, humor, compassion, and maturity beyond his years. However, he's not perfect; one of the reasons he is such a likable person is because the reader can see how he struggles to do the right thing even when the outcome might be not at all what he intended.
My favorite character is probably Matt's mother. She is my favorite character because she is so brave. Her husband died so she is left to protect four children on her own. I believe that this would be a struggle for a woman stuck in the middle of the war with no one to help her protect her family. This shows that she is a strong and independent woman. My least favorite character is probably Mr. Jones because of the way he judges people. For example, he doesn't want Matt to be friends with Jesse anymore because of the fact that Jesse's brother Buck is a "bushwhacker" and Jesse seems to be following in his footsteps.

My favorite character is probably Clayton. I know a lot of readers probably disregard Clayton as the bossy older brother, but I think his intelligence and bravery after all his physical problems are admirable and inspirational. I dislike Jesse because he is causing Matt to lie and is small-minded. He won't even listen to Matt when he talks about Mr. Stone's death! He thinks the bushwhackers are just angels and anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly mistaken.

I think my favorite character is Matt because he is still just a kid but knows how to do anything. He knows what to do if strange people come by him, he knows how to take care of himself,and he takes care of his whole family while dealing with this war and his friend Jess. My least favorite character would be his oldest brother Clayton because he won't let Matt or Ben make mistakes they have to be perfect,but if you don't make mistakes how are they supposed to learn these things. Clayton feels bad for himself when he really needs to be feeling bad for Matt and Ben because Ben never really had his dad around to teach him things and Matt has to do all the farming stuff because of the fact that no one else will help him with alot of the stuff.

Right now, I don't have a favorite character yet, but my least favorite characters are definatly Sam and Scott because I thought that it was sort of pointless to have them beat Matt up, because he didn't really do anything; Jesse was the one who defended him, and all that Matt had done was ride up to them.

I agree with many of the responses above, especially with Mc Candy Apple. I wanted to add however, that I'm also very fond of Dr. Samuel. My impression of him is that he's a very kind, loving, and caring person. Especially since he's also a doctor, I can tell he's very helpful and involved with his community as well.

My favorite character is Clayton. He is smart and knowledgable. He knows what is going on around him, and knows when to open his mouth. He has difficulties that he overcomes, and doesn't complain.
I really appreciate all these answers! Isn't it interesting how everybody seems to like a different character, or some people might like one character and others don't like him?
It's just as in real life, I think. If we all liked the same people it would be a boring world!

Clayton is probably my favorite character right now because he knows right from wrong and he is understanding of others even though he has a disability. Also, he takes care of everyone, and is very knowledgeable. Also, he is responsible, because he is trying to do something with his life, he's not just letting it pass by. My least favorite character is Jesse because he is always mean to Matt, and always thinks he is right. He never cares about anyone else except his ideas. He never looks at the other side of the problem.

My favorite charater is probably Clayton because he is patient and understanding of others even though he has a disabiltiy. He also is very knowledgeable and knows the difference between right and wrong and also tries to watch out for Matt and keep him safe. Also, he is trying to do something with his life and make a living, he's not letting it just pass by. Jesse is probably my least favorite character because he is mean to Matt and doesn't see the sides of anyone else. He is irresponsible and impatient.

My favorite character would have to be Jesse. This is because Jesse actually knows what's going on during the war. Jesse is also pretty humorous during the story. My least favorite character is Ben. This is because Ben is a brat and because he's an idiot who can't ever keep his mouth shut. I think that Ben makes just about every one of his family members angry with him for being annoying, or by talking too much
